Theoretical motorcycle course

Before you start driving lessons for category A, A2, or A1, you must complete a mandatory 3-hour motorcycle theory course. The purpose of this course is to give you an introduction to what it means to ride a motorcycle, as well as an overview of the training you’ll go through before taking the practical test.

One of the topics covered in the course is becoming familiar with the characteristics of the motorcycle community and culture.Another important topic is discussing and reflecting on the risks associated with motorcycle riding.

But most importantly, you’ve taken the first step into an amazing world on two wheels!

Basic Traffic Course

Before you can take driving lessons or practice driving, you must complete the Basic Traffic Course. This course is mandatory for everyone under the age of 25 who is getting a driver’s license for the first time.It consists of 17 hours of instruction, spread over 5 course evenings.

Minimum Age Limits

  • A1: Minimum age 16
  • A2: Minimum age 18
  • A: Minimum age 24

Upgrading Your Motorcycle License

The minimum age for Class A is 20 years, provided you already hold an A2 license and have held it for 2 years. You must complete a mandatory 7-hour safety course at a driving school. This course can only be started once you have held your A2 license for at least one year.

Are you over 24 years old? Then you can skip A2 and go straight to A.

You only need to take the theory test once. If you wish to upgrade to a higher category, you may be required to take a new practical driving test.

When upgrading from A2 to A, you must complete a mandatory 7-hour safety course at the driving school. If you have held your A2 license for 2 years, no new practical driving test is required.

Upgrading your motorcycle license from A1 to A2

Provided that you have held an A1 license for at least 2 years, you must complete the following to upgrade from A1 to A2:

  • Step 3 Assessment
  • Track Safety Course
  • On-Road Safety Course for A2

If you have held an A1 license for less than 2 years and are at least 18 years old, you may still upgrade to A2 — but you will also need to take a practical driving test. The price for the driving test is NOK 2,500.

Upgrading your motorcycle license from A2 to A

If you have obtained an A2 motorcycle license, you can upgrade A once you’ve held your A2 license for at least 2 years. For example: if you got your A2 license at age 18, you can upgrade to A when you turn 20. To upgrade from A2 to A, you must complete a 7-hour course at a certified driving school. No new practical test is required if you have held your A2 license for 2 years. If you obtain your A2 license at age 23, you may upgrade to A at age 24. However, since you have only held the A2 license for one year, you are required to complete the same 7-hour course and take a practical driving test.
